Torre di Roccabruna
Torre Bruna or di Rocca Bruna was once among the tallest in the city, rivaling the Torre del Mangia, located just opposite it in Piazza del Campo. Like most Sienese towers, it was lowered in the sixteenth century. It belonged to the Maconi, Biringucci, and Tommasi families, then to the nobleman Mino Campioni in the early eighteenth century, and finally to the Sansedoni family, owners of the famous palazzo that bears their name.
The tower, which dates from the same period as the Rocca Bruna, was known as the Serravalle Tower because it was built in that precise spot to block off and control the upper part of the Campo when it was still a wild valley. Built of limestone with a square base, it was originally pierced with a number of openings, which have now been replaced by windows to integrate with the neighbouring building. The crenellation that tops it off, made of brick, may be attributed to a fourteenth-century intervention after the tower was trimmed down to the height of the rooftops of the houses. All that remains of the fourteenth-century structure is the façade on Via Banchi di Sotto, which has been considerably altered but retains an original triple lancet window on the first floor. The façade on Croce del Travaglio is made entirely of grey stone and features an embattled crowning, which was added after the building’s height was reduced.
